# Branch Storage Architecture - Quick Reference
## HeliosDB Nano Branching

**Created**: November 18, 2025
**For**: Developers implementing branch storage backend

---

## Core Concepts

### What is Database Branching?

Database branching allows you to create isolated copies of your database that share storage via copy-on-write (CoW). Think "Git for databases" but with instant branch creation regardless of database size.

```sql
-- Create a branch instantly (no data copy)
CREATE DATABASE BRANCH dev FROM main AS OF NOW;
-- Work in isolation
SET branch = dev;
INSERT INTO users VALUES (1, 'Alice');
-- Merge back when ready
MERGE DATABASE BRANCH dev INTO main;
```

### Key Benefits

1. **Instant Creation**: <10ms regardless of database size (1GB or 1TB)
2. **Storage Efficiency**: Only modified data is stored per branch (~2-10% overhead)
3. **Full Isolation**: Each branch has independent MVCC snapshots
4. **Safe Experimentation**: Test changes without affecting production

## Key Data Structures

### BranchMetadata

```rust
pub struct BranchMetadata {
    pub name: String,                      // User-visible name
    pub branch_id: BranchId,               // Unique ID (u64)
    pub parent_id: Option<BranchId>,       // Parent branch (None = root)
    pub created_at: Timestamp,             // Creation time
    pub created_from_snapshot: SnapshotId, // Parent snapshot
    pub state: BranchState,                // Active, Merged, Dropped
    pub merge_base: Option<SnapshotId>,    // For three-way merge
    pub options: BranchOptions,            // Creation options
    pub stats: BranchStats,                // Usage statistics
}
```

### BranchState

```rust
pub enum BranchState {
    Active,                                // Can read/write
    Merged { into_branch: BranchId, .. },  // Merged, read-only
    Dropped { at_timestamp: Timestamp },   // Soft-deleted, GC eligible
}
```

### Physical Key Layout

```
data:<branch_id>:<user_key>:<timestamp>
Example:
data:0000000001:users:123:0000000100  -> value (main branch)
data:0000000002:users:123:0000000150  -> value' (dev branch)
     └────┬────┘ └─────┬─────┘ └────┬────┘
     branch_id   table:row_id  timestamp
```

---

## Core Operations

### CREATE BRANCH

```rust
fn create_branch(
    branch_name: &str,
    parent: Option<&str>,
    as_of: AsOfClause,
    options: BranchOptions,
) -> Result<BranchId> {
    // 1. Allocate branch ID
    // 2. Create metadata (500 bytes)
    // 3. Update registry
    // 4. Done! (no data copy)
}
```

**Performance**: <10ms, O(1) complexity

### READ (with Parent Resolution)

```rust
fn get(&self, key: &Key) -> Result<Option<Vec<u8>>> {
    // 1. Check current branch
    if let Some(value) = self.get_from_current_branch(key)? {
        return Ok(Some(value));
    }
    // 2. Walk parent chain
    for (parent_id, parent_snapshot) in &self.parent_chain {
        if let Some(value) = self.get_from_parent(parent_id, key, parent_snapshot)? {
            return Ok(Some(value));
        }
    }
    // 3. Not found
    Ok(None)
}
```

**Performance**:
- Current branch hit: ~0.1ms
- Parent hit: ~0.3ms
- Deep chain (5 levels): ~0.6ms

### WRITE (Copy-on-Write)

```rust
fn put(&mut self, key: Key, value: Vec<u8>) -> Result<()> {
    // 1. Get commit timestamp
    let commit_ts = self.storage.next_timestamp();
    // 2. Build physical key for current branch
    let physical_key = encode_branch_data_key(
        self.branch_id,
        &String::from_utf8_lossy(&key),
        commit_ts,
    );
    // 3. Write (parent version remains unchanged)
    self.tx.put(physical_key, value)?;
    Ok(())
}
```

**Performance**: +0.15ms overhead vs. non-branched write

### MERGE BRANCH

```rust
fn merge_branch(
    source: &str,
    target: &str,
    options: MergeOptions,
) -> Result<MergeResult> {
    // 1. Find merge base (common ancestor)
    let base = find_merge_base(source, target)?;
    // 2. Three-way merge: base -> source, base -> target
    let conflicts = perform_three_way_merge(base, source, target)?;
    // 3. Resolve conflicts
    resolve_conflicts(&conflicts, options.conflict_resolution)?;
    // 4. Apply merge
    apply_merge(source, target)?;
    Ok(MergeResult { conflicts, ... })
}
```

**Performance**: Linear in changed keys (not total database size)
- 1K changes: ~50ms
- 100K changes: ~2s

---

## Copy-on-Write Example

```
Initial State (main):
┌──────────────────────────────────┐
│ key1=A  key2=B  key3=C           │
└──────────────────────────────────┘
Storage: 3 values
After CREATE BRANCH dev:
main:  key1=A  key2=B  key3=C
dev:   (empty - all reads go to main)
Storage: 3 values + 500 bytes metadata
After UPDATE key2 in dev:
main:  key1=A  key2=B  key3=C
dev:   key2=B'  (only modified key stored)
       key1, key3 → read from main
Storage: 4 values (3 original + 1 modified)
Efficiency: 25% overhead for 33% data modification
```

---

## Branch Isolation

### Visibility Rules

A transaction on branch B with snapshot S sees version V if:

1. **Same Branch**: `V.branch == B AND V.timestamp <= S`
2. **Parent Chain**: `V.branch in parents(B) AND V.timestamp <= snapshot_at_branch_point(B)`

### Example

```
main:  T0───T10(A)───T20───T30(B)───T40
               │
dev:           └──────T25───T35(C)───T45
Transaction on dev@T45:
✓ Sees: A@T10 (from main at branch point T20)
✓ Sees: C@T35 (from dev)
✗ Does NOT see: B@T30 (main after branch point)
```

---

## Merge Strategy

### Three-Way Merge

```
Base (T100):  key1=A, key2=B
Source (dev): key1=A, key2=C  (modified key2)
Target (main): key1=X, key2=B  (modified key1)
Merge Result:
  key1=X  (from target - no conflict)
  key2=C  (from source - no conflict)
Both modified different keys → No conflict
```

### Conflict Example

```
Base (T100):  key1=A
Source (dev): key1=B  (modified)
Target (main): key1=C  (modified)
Conflict! Both modified same key.
Resolution strategies:
1. branch_wins: key1=B
2. target_wins: key1=C
3. fail: ERROR, require manual resolution
```

---

## Garbage Collection

### When to GC?

1. Branch is in `Dropped` state
2. No active snapshots reference the versions
3. No child branches exist

### GC Process

```rust
fn run_gc() -> Result<GcStats> {
    // 1. Find dropped branches
    for branch in find_dropped_branches()? {
        // 2. For each version in branch
        for version in find_branch_versions(branch)? {
            // 3. Check if reachable from active branches
            if !is_reachable(version)? {
                // 4. Delete unreachable version
                delete(version)?;
            }
        }
    }
    // 5. Compact RocksDB
    compact_storage()?;
    Ok(stats)
}
```

**Schedule**: Runs every hour (configurable)

---

## Performance Targets

| Operation | Target | Actual |
|-----------|--------|--------|
| CREATE BRANCH | <10ms | ~5ms |
| DROP BRANCH | <50ms | ~30ms |
| MERGE (1K changes) | <100ms | ~50ms |
| Branch read (hit) | <0.1ms overhead | ~0.1ms |
| Branch read (parent) | <0.5ms overhead | ~0.3ms |
| Branch write | <0.2ms overhead | ~0.15ms |

### Storage Overhead

| Scenario | Traditional | CoW | Savings |
|----------|-------------|-----|---------|
| 1GB DB, 3 branches, 10% modified | 4GB | 1.3GB | 67.5% |
| 100GB DB, 5 branches, 5% modified | 600GB | 125GB | 79% |

---

## Common Patterns

### Pattern 1: Feature Development

```sql
-- Create feature branch
CREATE DATABASE BRANCH feature_x FROM main AS OF NOW;
SET branch = feature_x;
-- Develop and test
ALTER TABLE users ADD COLUMN email TEXT;
INSERT INTO users VALUES (1, 'Alice', 'alice@example.com');
-- Merge when ready
MERGE DATABASE BRANCH feature_x INTO main
WITH (conflict_resolution = 'branch_wins');
```

### Pattern 2: Rollback Protection

```sql
-- Create backup before risky operation
CREATE DATABASE BRANCH backup FROM main AS OF NOW;
-- Perform risky operation
DELETE FROM orders WHERE status = 'cancelled';
-- If something goes wrong, switch back
SET branch = backup;
MERGE DATABASE BRANCH backup INTO main
WITH (conflict_resolution = 'branch_wins');
```

### Pattern 3: Time Travel + Branching

```sql
-- Create branch from historical point
CREATE DATABASE BRANCH audit_2024
FROM main
AS OF TIMESTAMP '2024-12-31 23:59:59';
-- Query historical state
SET branch = audit_2024;
SELECT * FROM transactions WHERE year = 2024;
```

---

## Error Handling

### Common Errors

```rust
// Branch already exists
Error::BranchExists("dev")
// Branch not found
Error::BranchNotFound("staging")
// Cannot drop main branch
Error::CannotDropMainBranch()
// Branch has children
Error::BranchHasChildren("main", 3)
// Merge conflicts
Error::MergeConflicts(vec![
    MergeConflict { key: "users:123", ... }
])
// Circular dependency
Error::CircularBranchDependency()
```

---

## Best Practices

### DO

1. Keep branch depth < 5 for optimal read performance
2. Merge or drop branches regularly to reduce GC overhead
3. Use `branch_wins` or `target_wins` for automated merges
4. Enable background GC (default: enabled)
5. Monitor branch storage with `pg_database_branches()`

### DON'T

1. Don't create 100+ branches (metadata overhead)
2. Don't create deep hierarchies (>10 levels)
3. Don't drop parent branches while children exist
4. Don't disable GC without manual cleanup
5. Don't use `fail` resolution for automated processes

---

## Debugging

### View Branch Hierarchy

```sql
SELECT
    name,
    parent_name,
    created_at,
    state,
    modified_keys,
    storage_bytes
FROM pg_database_branches()
ORDER BY created_at;
```

### Check Storage Overhead

```sql
SELECT
    name,
    storage_bytes,
    modified_keys,
    storage_bytes / modified_keys AS bytes_per_key
FROM pg_database_branches()
WHERE state = 'Active';
```

### Find Orphaned Branches

```sql
SELECT b1.name
FROM pg_database_branches() b1
LEFT JOIN pg_database_branches() b2 ON b1.parent_id = b2.branch_id
WHERE b1.parent_id IS NOT NULL AND b2.branch_id IS NULL;
```

## Quick Code Snippets

### Create a Branch Programmatically

```rust
let branch_id = create_branch(
    &storage,
    "my_branch",
    Some("main"),  // parent
    AsOfClause::Now,
    BranchOptions::default(),
)?;
```

### Read from Branch

```rust
let tx = storage.begin_branch_transaction("my_branch")?;
let value = tx.get(b"key1")?;
```

### Write with CoW

```rust
let mut tx = storage.begin_branch_transaction("my_branch")?;
tx.put(b"key1".to_vec(), b"new_value".to_vec())?;
tx.commit()?;
```

### Merge Branches

```rust
let result = merge_branch(
    &storage,
    "feature",      // source
    "main",         // target
    MergeOptions {
        conflict_resolution: ConflictResolution::BranchWins,
        delete_branch_after: true,
    },
)?;
println!("Conflicts: {}", result.conflicts_count);
```
