Autonomous Self-Healing Database

HeliosDB Full plans autonomous operations for teams without round-the-clock DBA coverage: cognitive agents that detect, diagnose and resolve common database problems, such as slow queries, missing indexes and poorly tuned settings, and report what they changed. These agents are on the roadmap and not in the current release of HeliosDB Full, which runs as a single server.

Planned: autonomous self-healing agents are on the roadmap. Read the documentation.

Problem Being Solved

Core Problem: Database operations require expensive, scarce DBA expertise for tasks that could be automated, causing delayed issue resolution and high personnel costs.

Root Cause: Traditional databases generate alerts but cannot act on them:

  • Alert Fatigue: DBAs receive 100s of alerts daily, most false positives
  • Manual Diagnosis: Finding root cause requires hours of investigation
  • Reactive Operations: Issues discovered after users complain
  • Knowledge Silos: DBA expertise not codified, lost when staff leaves
  • 24/7 Coverage: Need round-the-clock staffing for global operations

HeliosDB Solution: Cognitive Self-Healing

Key Capabilities

2. Root Cause Analysis

-- View recent incident analysis
SELECT * FROM heliosdb_system.incident_analysis
WHERE timestamp >= NOW() - INTERVAL '1 hour';

-- | incident_id | root_cause                  | confidence | auto_resolved |

-- Drill into specific incident
SELECT * FROM heliosdb_system.incident_details('INC-12345');
-- Shows causal chain: Runaway query → CPU spike → Queue buildup → Latency

3. Automated Remediation

-- View remediation actions
SELECT * FROM heliosdb_system.remediation_log
ORDER BY timestamp DESC LIMIT 10;

-- | timestamp  | action                      | trigger            | outcome |
-- | 10:15:33   | ENABLE_RATE_LIMIT          | Connections > 800  | SUCCESS |
-- | 10:16:01   | CREATE_INDEX(users.email)  | Slow query pattern | SUCCESS |

-- All automatic, no DBA intervention

4. Continuous Learning

-- View learning progress
SELECT * FROM heliosdb_system.ml_model_status;

-- | model              | accuracy | last_update | training_samples |

-- Model improves with each incident

Concrete Examples

Example 2: Slow Query Degradation

Scenario: New code deployment introduces slow queries

-- HeliosDB automatic detection and resolution

-- T+0: New deployment starts
-- T+30s: First slow query detected
-- T+31s: Pattern recognized: 15 queries with same structure

-- Automatic analysis:
SELECT * FROM heliosdb_system.slow_query_analysis;
-- | query_pattern                    | count | avg_ms | cause           |
-- | SELECT * FROM orders WHERE date  | 15    | 2500   | missing_index   |
-- | Recommended action: CREATE INDEX orders_date_idx ON orders(date)

-- T+32s: Auto-index creation started
-- T+35s: Index created

-- DBA notification (informational):

Example 3: Disk Space Emergency

Scenario: WAL accumulation threatens database availability

HeliosDB Self-Healing:
T+0:     WAL starts accumulating
T+30s: Anomaly detected: WAL growth rate abnormal
T+31s: Root cause: Replication slot 'old_replica' inactive
T+32s: Analysis: Slot inactive for 7 days
T+33s: Auto-action: Archive and drop stale slot
T+34s:   WAL cleanup initiated
T+1m:    Disk growth normalized

Risk window: 0 (issue resolved before becoming critical)
Notification: "Dropped inactive replication slot 'old_replica'"

Example 4: Memory Pressure

Scenario: Large query causing OOM risk

-- HeliosDB real-time memory management

-- T+0: Large export query submitted
SELECT * FROM orders WHERE year >= 2020;  -- 500M rows

-- T+1s: HeliosDB detects potential memory issue
-- Query will consume 32GB, available: 16GB

-- Automatic intervention:
-- 1. Query rewritten to use streaming cursor
-- 2. Result set spooled to temp storage
-- 3. Memory usage capped at 4GB

-- T+5m: Query completes successfully

-- User sees:
-- Query executed successfully (streaming mode)
-- Time: 5m 23s
-- Rows: 523,847,291

Performance depends on workload and hardware. Published figures are measured on representative fixtures; see the benchmarks page and reproduce them on your own workload.
