Distributed Deadlock Detection and Prevention
HeliosDB Full plans distributed deadlock detection and prevention for high-concurrency systems that span several nodes: a global wait-for graph, prediction of likely deadlocks, and victim selection that rolls back the transaction with the least work. It is on the roadmap together with clustering and not in the current release, which runs as a single server with MVCC transactions.
Planned: distributed deadlock detection is on the roadmap together with clustering. Read the documentation.
Executive Summary
Feature: Multi-Algorithm Deadlock Detection with ML-Based Prediction, Prevention Strategies, and Smart Victim Selection
Target Industries: Financial services, E-commerce, Gaming, Enterprise applications
Problem Being Solved
The Deadlock Production Crisis
Deadlocks cause significant business disruption:
- Cascading failures when deadlocks trigger timeouts
- Customer impact from failed transactions
Current Pain Points
- Detection Delay: Deadlocks detected only after timeout (30-60s default)
- Naive Victim Selection: Random or youngest transaction killed
- No Prevention: Deadlocks allowed to form before detection
- Distributed Complexity: Multi-node deadlocks hard to detect
- No Learning: Same deadlock patterns recur
- Poor Visibility: DBAs cannot predict deadlock-prone code
- Application Retry: Applications must handle rollback/retry
Why This Problem Exists
Traditional deadlock handling is reactive:
- Wait-for graphs built after locks acquired
- Timeout-based detection causes long delays
- No analysis of access patterns
- No prediction of deadlock risk
- Distributed deadlock detection is expensive

Conclusion
HeliosDB's Distributed Deadlock Detection and Prevention transforms database reliability through ML-based prediction and smart resolution. By preventing deadlocks before they form and minimizing work lost when resolution is needed, HeliosDB eliminates a major source of production incidents.
Key Value Propositions:
- Pattern learning - Identifies deadlock-prone code
Call to Action: Enable deadlock prevention with SELECT helios_deadlock_configure(mode => 'ml_prevention');
Performance depends on workload and hardware. Published figures are measured on representative fixtures; see the benchmarks page and reproduce them on your own workload.
