Energy-Aware Database Optimization
HeliosDB Full plans energy-aware database operation for organizations with sustainability targets: tracking the energy use and carbon footprint of workloads, and scheduling deferrable jobs such as batch analytics and maintenance for hours when the grid runs on cleaner power. Energy-aware optimization is a research item on the roadmap and not part of the current release.
Planned: energy-aware and carbon-aware scheduling is a research item on the roadmap. Read the documentation.
Problem Being Solved
Root Cause: Traditional databases optimize for performance only:
- Blind to Energy: Query optimizers consider CPU/IO cost, not energy cost
- No Carbon Awareness: Workloads run regardless of grid carbon intensity
- Hardware Ignorance: No preference for efficient execution paths
- No Measurement: No visibility into database energy consumption

Conclusion
Organizations can:
- Measure Impact: Per-query energy and carbon attribution
- Meet Compliance: Ready-made ESG reporting for regulations
Performance depends on workload and hardware. Published figures are measured on representative fixtures; see the benchmarks page and reproduce them on your own workload.
