Interactive Query Optimizer Hints

HeliosDB Full plans interactive optimizer hints for developers who need to steer one specific query: hints written in SQL comments that force an index, fix the join order, set the degree of parallelism or bypass the cache, while the statement stays portable to other databases. Optimizer hints are on the roadmap and not in the current release of HeliosDB Full.

Planned: optimizer hints are on the roadmap.

Executive Summary

HeliosDB's Interactive Query Optimizer Hints system enables developers to guide query execution strategies through SQL comment-based hints without modifying application logic.

Configuration Example

-- Force index usage
SELECT /*+ INDEX(orders idx_customer_date) */
    customer_id, SUM(amount)
FROM orders
WHERE order_date > '2024-01-01'
GROUP BY customer_id;

-- Control join order and parallelism
SELECT /*+ JOIN_ORDER(customers, orders, items) PARALLEL(8) */
    c.name, o.order_id, i.product_name
FROM customers c
JOIN orders o ON c.id = o.customer_id
JOIN items i ON o.id = i.order_id;

Concrete Examples

Example 1: E-commerce Order Analytics

Company Profile: Online retailer, 50M orders, 10TB database

Before HeliosDB:

SELECT customer_id, SUM(amount), COUNT(*)
FROM orders
WHERE order_date BETWEEN '2024-01-01' AND '2024-01-31'
GROUP BY customer_id;

-- DBA tried: ANALYZE TABLE, query rewrites, temp tables

With HeliosDB:

SELECT /*+ INDEX(orders idx_order_date) */
    customer_id, SUM(amount), COUNT(*)
FROM orders
WHERE order_date BETWEEN '2024-01-01' AND '2024-01-31'
GROUP BY customer_id;

Example 2: Financial Trading Platform

Challenge: Critical pricing queries had unpredictable performance

Before HeliosDB:

SELECT symbol, price, timestamp
FROM market_data
WHERE symbol = 'AAPL' AND timestamp > NOW() - INTERVAL '1 hour'
ORDER BY timestamp DESC LIMIT 100;

-- Optimizer switched plans based on statistics

With HeliosDB:

-- Guaranteed consistent plan
SELECT /*+ INDEX(market_data idx_symbol_time) NO_CACHE */
    symbol, price, timestamp
FROM market_data
WHERE symbol = 'AAPL' AND timestamp > NOW() - INTERVAL '1 hour'
ORDER BY timestamp DESC LIMIT 100;

Example 3: Healthcare Analytics

Company Profile: Hospital network, 20M patient records, HIPAA compliant

Challenge: Complex multi-table joins for patient outcomes took hours

Before HeliosDB:

SELECT p.patient_id, d.diagnosis, t.treatment, o.outcome
FROM patients p
JOIN diagnoses d ON p.id = d.patient_id
JOIN treatments t ON d.id = t.diagnosis_id
JOIN outcomes o ON t.id = o.treatment_id
WHERE p.admission_date > '2024-01-01';

With HeliosDB:

SELECT /*+ JOIN_ORDER(patients, diagnoses, treatments, outcomes)
           PARALLEL(16) */
    p.patient_id, d.diagnosis, t.treatment, o.outcome
FROM patients p
JOIN diagnoses d ON p.id = d.patient_id
JOIN treatments t ON d.id = t.diagnosis_id
JOIN outcomes o ON t.id = o.treatment_id
WHERE p.admission_date > '2024-01-01';

Example 4: SaaS Multi-Tenant Platform

Company Profile: B2B SaaS, 5,000 tenants, shared database

Challenge: Large tenant queries impacted small tenant performance

Before HeliosDB:

-- Large tenant query consumed all resources
SELECT * FROM events WHERE tenant_id = 'enterprise_corp'
AND event_date > '2024-01-01';

With HeliosDB:

-- Resource-limited query for large tenants
SELECT /*+ PARALLEL(4) TIMEOUT(30s) MAX_ROWS(100000) */
    * FROM events
WHERE tenant_id = 'enterprise_corp'
AND event_date > '2024-01-01';

Example 5: IoT Sensor Analytics

Challenge: Time-series aggregations required different strategies by time range

Before HeliosDB:

SELECT sensor_id, AVG(reading), MAX(reading)
FROM sensor_data
WHERE timestamp BETWEEN @start AND @end
GROUP BY sensor_id;

With HeliosDB:

-- Dynamic hints based on time range
SELECT /*+ INDEX(sensor_data idx_time_sensor)
           PARALLEL(CASE WHEN @range > '30 days' THEN 32 ELSE 4 END) */
    sensor_id, AVG(reading), MAX(reading)
FROM sensor_data
WHERE timestamp BETWEEN @start AND @end
GROUP BY sensor_id;

Conclusion

HeliosDB's Interactive Query Optimizer Hints system transforms query performance management from a specialized DBA skill to a developer-accessible capability.

Performance depends on workload and hardware. Published figures are measured on representative fixtures; see the benchmarks page and reproduce them on your own workload.
