Privacy-First Database Platform

HeliosDB Full plans privacy-preserving analytics for sensitive data: queries over homomorphically encrypted values, differential privacy on aggregate results and federated learning across sites that keep their data local. These capabilities are on the roadmap and not in the current release. Today HeliosDB Full authenticates PostgreSQL clients with SCRAM-SHA-256, and encryption at rest with key rotation is planned as well.

Planned: homomorphic encryption, differential privacy and federated learning are on the roadmap. Read the documentation.

Executive Summary

These privacy-preserving technologies enable organizations to extract value from sensitive data without exposing it, achieving regulatory compliance (HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA) by design while maintaining query performance within practical bounds.

Problem Being Solved

Core Problem: Organizations cannot analyze sensitive data without exposing it, forcing a binary choice between privacy and utility.

Root Cause: Traditional encryption protects data at rest and in transit, but computation requires decryption:

  • Decryption for Processing: To compute SUM(salary), you must decrypt all salaries
  • Analytics Exposure: Running queries exposes data to DBAs, applications, and logs
  • Centralization Risk: Aggregating data for ML creates massive breach targets
  • Regulatory Conflict: HIPAA/GDPR requires protection; analytics requires access

The Problem

The Privacy-Utility Trade-off

Organizations face an impossible choice between data utility and privacy:

Key Privacy Capabilities

1. Homomorphic Encryption Queries

Compute on encrypted data without decryption:

-- Create encrypted column
ALTER TABLE employees ADD COLUMN salary_enc ENCRYPTED_INT;

-- Insert encrypted data
INSERT INTO employees (name, salary_enc)
VALUES ('Alice', heliosdb_encrypt(150000));

-- Query encrypted data (never decrypted during computation)
SELECT heliosdb_encrypted_sum(salary_enc)
FROM employees
WHERE department = 'Engineering';
-- Returns encrypted result, decrypted only at client

-- Supported operations:
-- - SUM, AVG, COUNT (aggregations)
-- - Comparisons (>, <, =)
-- - Basic arithmetic (+, -, ×)

2. Automatic Differential Privacy

Formal privacy guarantees for analytics:

-- Enable differential privacy for table
SELECT heliosdb_enable_dp(
    table_name => 'customer_data',
    epsilon => 1.0,           -- Privacy budget
    delta => 1e-6,            -- Failure probability
    sensitivity => 'auto'     -- Auto-detect query sensitivity
);

-- Query with automatic noise injection
SELECT
    age_group,
    dp_count(*) AS customer_count,  -- Noised count
    dp_avg(purchase_amount) AS avg_purchase  -- Noised average
FROM customer_data
GROUP BY age_group;

-- Privacy guarantee: Results are (ε, δ)-differentially private
-- Budget tracking: Automatic across all queries

Mechanisms: 6 different DP mechanisms (Laplace, Gaussian, Exponential, etc.) Budget Management: Hierarchical privacy budgets per user/table/query

3. Federated Learning Platform

Train models across distributed data without centralization:

-- Create federated learning job
SELECT heliosdb_create_fl_job(
    job_name => 'fraud_detection',
    model_type => 'logistic_regression',
    target_column => 'is_fraud',
    feature_columns => ARRAY['amount', 'merchant_type', 'time_since_last'],
    participating_databases => ARRAY[
        'bank_a.transactions',
        'bank_b.transactions',
        'bank_c.transactions'
    ],
    aggregation_strategy => 'federated_averaging',
    privacy_budget => 3.0  -- Total DP budget
);

-- Execute federated training
SELECT heliosdb_run_fl_job('fraud_detection', rounds => 100);

-- Query model performance (no data left individual databases)
SELECT * FROM heliosdb_fl_model_metrics('fraud_detection');
-- AUC: 0.94, trained across 50M transactions
-- Zero data shared between participants

Concrete Examples

Example 1: Healthcare Analytics Without PHI Exposure

Company Profile: Healthcare analytics company serving 50 hospitals

Challenge: Analyze patient outcomes across hospitals without centralizing PHI

After HeliosDB:

-- Federated learning across hospital databases
-- PHI never leaves individual hospitals

-- Create multi-hospital outcome model
SELECT heliosdb_create_fl_job(
    job_name => 'readmission_prediction',
    model_type => 'gradient_boosted_trees',
    target => 'readmitted_30_days',
    features => ARRAY[
        'age', 'diagnosis_code', 'procedure_count',
        'length_of_stay', 'medication_count'
    ],
    participants => (
        SELECT database_endpoint
        FROM participating_hospitals
    ),
    privacy_budget => 5.0
);

-- Train model across 50 hospitals
SELECT heliosdb_run_fl_job('readmission_prediction', rounds => 200);

-- Model trained on 2M patient records
-- Zero PHI centralized
-- HIPAA compliant by design

Example 2: Financial Services Encrypted Analytics

Challenge: Analyze client portfolios without exposing individual holdings

Solution:

-- Enable homomorphic encryption on sensitive columns
ALTER TABLE client_portfolios ADD COLUMN
    portfolio_value_enc ENCRYPTED_DECIMAL;
ALTER TABLE client_portfolios ADD COLUMN
    risk_score_enc ENCRYPTED_INT;

-- Migrate existing data to encrypted columns
UPDATE client_portfolios
SET portfolio_value_enc = heliosdb_encrypt(portfolio_value),
    risk_score_enc = heliosdb_encrypt(risk_score);

-- Analytics on encrypted data
SELECT
    client_segment,
    heliosdb_encrypted_sum(portfolio_value_enc) AS total_aum,
    heliosdb_encrypted_avg(risk_score_enc) AS avg_risk
FROM client_portfolios
GROUP BY client_segment;

-- Results decrypted only at authorized client
-- Database administrators cannot see individual values
-- Audit log shows encrypted operations only

Use Case: Compliance Reports
-- Generate AUM report without exposing client data
SELECT heliosdb_generate_report(
    report_type => 'regulatory_aum',
    encryption_key => $client_key,  -- Client-held key
    output_format => 'encrypted_pdf'
);
-- Regulator decrypts with their key
-- Internal staff never see plaintext

Example 3: Retail Customer Analytics with Privacy Guarantees

Company Profile: National retailer with 10M customers, CCPA/GDPR obligations

Challenge: Derive marketing insights while respecting privacy regulations

-- Configure differential privacy for marketing analytics
SELECT heliosdb_configure_dp_policy(
    schema => 'marketing',
    global_epsilon => 10.0,    -- Daily budget
    per_query_epsilon => 0.5,   -- Max per query
    audit_logging => true
);

-- Marketing team queries (automatic DP noise injection)
SELECT
    purchase_category,
    dp_count(DISTINCT customer_id) AS customer_count,
    dp_percentile(purchase_amount, 0.5) AS median_purchase,
    dp_avg(items_per_basket) AS avg_basket_size
FROM transactions
WHERE transaction_date >= CURRENT_DATE - INTERVAL '30 days'
GROUP BY purchase_category
HAVING dp_count(*) > 100;  -- Suppress small groups

-- Privacy guarantees:
-- - Individual customer cannot be identified
-- - Compliant with CCPA "reasonable security"
-- - GDPR Article 25 "data protection by design"
-- - Automatic privacy budget enforcement

-- View privacy budget usage
SELECT * FROM heliosdb_dp_budget_status('marketing');
-- | date       | epsilon_used | epsilon_remaining |
-- | 2025-11-28 |         3.5  |              6.5  |

Example 4: Multi-Bank Fraud Detection

Company Profile: Consortium of 10 banks combating fraud

Challenge: Detect fraud patterns across banks without sharing customer data

-- Create fraud detection consortium
SELECT heliosdb_create_fl_consortium(
    consortium_name => 'fraud_detection_alliance',
    participants => ARRAY[
        'bank_alpha.transactions',
        'bank_beta.transactions',
        'bank_gamma.transactions',
        -- ... 7 more banks
    ],

        "output": "sigmoid"
    }',
    features => ARRAY[
        'transaction_amount_normalized',
        'merchant_risk_score',
        'velocity_24h',
        'device_fingerprint_hash',
        'geo_anomaly_score'
    ]
);

-- Execute federated training
SELECT heliosdb_train_fl_model(
    model => 'cross_bank_fraud_v1',
    rounds => 500,
    batch_size => 1024,
    secure_aggregation => true  -- Cryptographic protection
);

-- Training data: 500M transactions across 10 banks
-- Zero customer data shared

-- Deploy model to all banks
SELECT heliosdb_deploy_fl_model(
    model => 'cross_bank_fraud_v1',
    deployment => 'all_participants',
    inference_mode => 'local' -- Each bank runs locally
);
