Serverless Scale-to-Zero Database
HeliosDB Full plans serverless operation for development, staging and other databases that sit idle for long periods: compute that suspends when no queries arrive, resumes on the next connection and scales with load. Scale-to-zero and autoscaling are on the roadmap and not in the current release, which runs as a single server that you scale vertically with more CPU, memory and faster disks.
Planned: serverless scale-to-zero and autoscaling are on the roadmap. Read the documentation.
Problem Being Solved
Root Cause: Traditional databases require always-running processes to handle connections:
- Connection State: TCP connections timeout if server goes away
- Storage Coupling: Compute and storage tightly coupled, cannot scale independently
HeliosDB Solution: Intelligent Serverless

Key Capabilities
2. True Scale-to-Zero
-- Database automatically suspends after inactivity
ALTER DATABASE my_dev_db SET suspend_timeout = '5 minutes';
-- Cost during idle:
psql postgres://my-dev-db.db.example.com/db
4. Predictive Scaling
-- Enable predictive autoscaling
SELECT heliosdb_configure_autoscaling(
database => 'production',
min_cu => 2,
max_cu => 32,
scaling_mode => 'predictive', -- Uses ARIMA/LSTM
scale_up_threshold => 70, -- CPU %
scale_down_threshold => 30,
cooldown_seconds => 60
);
Concrete Examples
Example 1: Development Team Database Optimization
Company Profile: SaaS startup with 40 developers, each with their own database
Example 2: Multi-Environment Cost Optimization
Company Profile: E-commerce platform with production, staging, and 10 feature environments
Example 3: SaaS Multi-Tenant Optimization
Company Profile: B2B SaaS with 500 tenant databases, varied usage
Example 4: Event-Driven Application
Company Profile: Concert ticketing platform with extreme traffic spikes
HeliosDB Solution:
-- Configure for burst workload
SELECT heliosdb_configure_autoscaling(
database => 'ticketing',
min_cu => 0, -- Scale to zero when idle
max_cu => 128, -- Massive burst capacity
scaling_mode => 'aggressive',
scale_up_sensitivity => 'high',
burst_multiplier => 10
);
-- Schedule-based pre-warming
SELECT heliosdb_schedule_warmup(
database => 'ticketing',
schedule => 'cron(55 9 * * ? *)', -- 9:55 AM daily
target_cu => 64,
warmup_queries => ARRAY[
'SELECT * FROM events WHERE on_sale_date = CURRENT_DATE',
'SELECT * FROM seating_charts WHERE event_id IN (...)'
]
);
Example 5: Global Startup Expansion
Company Profile: Fintech startup expanding from US to Europe and Asia
Challenge: Need database presence in 3 regions but traffic varies
Implementation Roadmap
Quick Start
# Install CLI
$ brew install heliosdb-cli
# Create serverless database
$ heliosdb create myapp-dev --serverless
Database 'myapp-dev' created
Endpoint: postgres://myapp-dev.db.example.com:5432/db
# Connect and use
$ psql postgres://myapp-dev.db.example.com/db
Migration from RDS
# 1. Create HeliosDB database
$ heliosdb create myapp-prod --serverless --region us-east-1
# 2. Configure autoscaling
$ heliosdb configure myapp-prod \
--min-cu 0 \
--max-cu 16 \
--suspend-timeout 300
# 3. Import data
$ heliosdb import myapp-prod \
--source postgres://rds-instance.aws.com/db \
--method cdc # Zero-downtime migration
# 4. Switch traffic
$ heliosdb dns myapp-prod --from rds-instance.aws.com
Traffic switched. RDS can be terminated.
Conclusion
HeliosDB's serverless scale-to-zero capability fundamentally changes database economics.
- Scale Fearlessly: Handle any traffic pattern without pre-provisioning
- Simplify Operations: No capacity planning or instance sizing
Performance depends on workload and hardware. Published figures are measured on representative fixtures; see the benchmarks page and reproduce them on your own workload.
