Window Functions for Real-Time Analytics

HeliosDB Lite computes rankings, running totals and row-to-row comparisons without collapsing rows, using SQL window functions: ROW_NUMBER, RANK, DENSE_RANK, NTILE, LAG, LEAD, FIRST_VALUE, LAST_VALUE, NTH_VALUE, PERCENT_RANK and CUME_DIST, plus SUM, AVG, COUNT, MIN and MAX over a window with PARTITION BY and ORDER BY, for leaderboards, financial reports and time-series dashboards.

Executive Summary

Window functions are essential for analytical workloads — computing rankings, running totals, moving averages, and peer comparisons without collapsing rows. HeliosDB Lite implements a complete suite of SQL window functions (ROW_NUMBER, RANK, DENSE_RANK, NTILE, LAG, LEAD, FIRST_VALUE, LAST_VALUE, NTH_VALUE, PERCENT_RANK, CUME_DIST) with PARTITION BY and ORDER BY support.

Key Business Value:

  • 11 window functions — Complete ranking, offset, and distribution function support
  • Embedded analytics — No separate OLAP server required
  • PARTITION BY + ORDER BY — Full windowing semantics for complex analytics

Problem Being Solved

The Analytics Gap in Embedded Databases

WorkaroundProblem
Application-level sorting + manual rankingError-prone, O(n log n) per query, duplicated logic
Multiple queries + post-processingRound-trip overhead, memory pressure, complex code
External analytics databaseInfrastructure cost, network latency, operational complexity
Pre-computed materialized columnsStale data, storage bloat, update complexity

Why Window Functions Matter

Concrete Examples

Example 1: Sales Leaderboard with Rankings

-- Sales team leaderboard with multiple ranking methods
SELECT
    name,
    region,
    total_sales,
    ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY total_sales DESC) as position,
    RANK() OVER (ORDER BY total_sales DESC) as rank,
    DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY total_sales DESC) as dense_rank,
    NTILE(4) OVER (ORDER BY total_sales DESC) as quartile,
    PERCENT_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY total_sales) as percentile
FROM sales_team;

Example 2: Time-Series Analysis with LAG/LEAD

-- Monthly revenue with period-over-period comparison
SELECT
    month,
    revenue,
    LAG(revenue, 1) OVER (ORDER BY month) as prev_month,
    LEAD(revenue, 1) OVER (ORDER BY month) as next_month,
    revenue - LAG(revenue, 1) OVER (ORDER BY month) as mom_change,
    FIRST_VALUE(revenue) OVER (ORDER BY month) as first_month_rev,
    LAST_VALUE(revenue) OVER (ORDER BY month) as ytd_latest
FROM monthly_metrics;

Example 3: Top-N Per Category

-- Top 3 products per category by revenue
SELECT * FROM (
    SELECT
        category,
        product_name,
        revenue,
        ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY category ORDER BY revenue DESC) as rank
    FROM products
) ranked
WHERE rank <= 3;

When to Use This

HeliosDB Lite’s window function support is most impactful for:

  1. Real-time leaderboards — Gaming, sales, fitness apps needing instant ranking updates
  2. Financial dashboards — Period-over-period comparison, running totals, trend analysis
  3. Time-series analytics — Moving averages, anomaly detection via LAG/LEAD
  4. Embedded BI — Self-contained analytics within applications, no external OLAP
  5. Edge analytics — IoT devices computing rankings and trends locally without cloud round-trips

Performance depends on workload and hardware. Published figures are measured on representative fixtures; see the benchmarks page and reproduce them on your own workload.
